His opencore package is great and that’s what I am using. You may need to watch these a few times and pause the video for each move he makes.
#OCTO 8 ON MAC PRO 5.1 HOW TO#
Mac Pro 5,1 how to install Catalina from Mojave. Opencore video his opencore package link is in the video description. He also is on MacRumors and puts new links to the newest versions of his opencore package there. Martin Lo is the opencore guru and has created an easy opencore install package link here which you need to install first on your Mojave drive, backup your system drive before doing this. Ok looks like there is a way to do it from the 5,1. Thanks for any help or advice on this as it's very much appreciated.

What exactly is that and if it's as easy as that then why do we have OpenCore? I'm not bashing OC at all as I've used it and it was really easy to do and I'm seriously grateful for all the hard work everybody has obviously put in to it but just wondering what was being mentioned in the other subreddit? He also said that he'd heard that Catalina doesn't run very well on a 5,1 so would love to hear if that's totally correct or not? I'm a user of Logic Pro, Final Cut Pro and Apple Motion along with graphics programmes (mainly Affinity Photo and their respective Apps) so would need the Mac to run well enough with Catalina for those otherwise I would have to stay with Mojave unfortunately.
#OCTO 8 ON MAC PRO 5.1 UPGRADE#
Also if anyone has any first hand experience of Catalina on an original Mac Pro 5,1 and whether I should wait to upgrade or if it's working fine and I can safely go ahead then that would be greatly appreciated also.Įdited to add : I originally posted this in the completely wrong subreddit (hackintosh instead of this one and have no idea how or why I did that as I've only ever owned Macintosh machines so must have gotten really confused somehow however someone mentioned just setting the no_compat_check on the recovery drive boot args to go about installing Catalina). Hopefully I've not confused with the above as I do have a tendency to ramble on so apologies in advance if that's the case here 😉Īny help with this would be greatly appreciated. I've set the UpdateSMBIOS flag to false and also the CpuidMask to AAAAAAAAAAAAAAACAAAAAAA (pretty sure I've written that correctly here but if not it's definitely right in the config file) but don't get anything different in either the System Preferences or App Store so my question is am I supposed to upgrade to Catalina from the App Store or should it somehow be done via the System Preferences?Īlso if it is via the App Store and I click 'Get' is it going to immediately install Catalina on my current system drive as I'd prefer to install it on a different drive just so I have Mojave safe incase anything goes wrong. If I go into the App Store though I can see Catalina says 'Get' though not sure if I should be installing it in that way or should it be installed via the System Preferences panel? If the panel then how do I get it to show up in there?
#OCTO 8 ON MAC PRO 5.1 UPDATE#
Only question is how to install Catalina as when I go to the System Preferences Software Update section it says "Your Mac is up to date - macOS Mojave 10.14.6). I'm now looking at installing Catalina though would possibly prefer to do this on a separate drive just incase anything goes wrong / doesn't work. I have an original Mac Pro 5,1 which I installed OpenCore onto a USB stick and have been able to upgrade it to Mojave (currently on 10.14.6). Hopefully this will be a quick one for somebody to answer.
